Weezer – Blue Album (1994) – A Peak At Their Debut

Weezer – Blue Album (1994). A Peak At Their Debut.

If you grew up in 90’s and you’re into rock music. Try to make this list: 30 CD’s/cassettes to buy/listen/borrow/steal in the 90’s.  There must be Nevermind (Nirvana), Ten (Pearl Jam), Superunknown (Soundgarden), Rage Against The Machine (debut album), Black Album (Metallica), Melon Colie And The Infinite Sadness (The Smashing Pumpkins), Blood Sugar Sexx Magik (Red Hot Chili Peppers), What’s The Story Morning Glory (Oasis), Angel Dust (Faith No More), Soundsystem (311), Use Your Illusion (Guns And Roses), The Downward Spiral (NIN), maybe Dummy (Portishead) and.. Blue Album from Weezer! Rite?

No? Well you have problems with your ears :p _weezer_-_blue_albumWhat has happened in 1994.

  • Nirvana played their final concert in Munich. Few weeks later he shot himself.
  • Frank Sinatra received the Grammy Awards Lifetime Achievement award.
  • Pink Floyd embarked on what would be their last world tour before their breakup. The record-breaking tour supported their Division Bell album, with the band playing to 5,500,000 people in 68 cities and grossing over £150,000,000.
  • Blur and Oasis started to invade USA
  • Green Day released Dookie album. Their masterpiece till now.
  • Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys is sentenced to 200 hours of community service for attacking a television cameraman during funeral services for actor River Phoenix in November 1993.
  • Pearl Jam filed a complaint against Ticketmaster with the U.S. Justice Department charging that the company has a monopoly on the concert ticket business.

You know that Buddy Holly music video directed by Spike Jonze (well known for film Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and also plenty of music videos). Remember Beastie Boys‘ Sabotage or Bjork’s It’s Oh So Quiet? I’ll stop here before i start blabbering  about him. That Buddy Holly video is one of the most anticipated video of the 90’s. Along with November Rain by Guns And Roses or maybe Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. Earned heavy rotation by MTV back then.

Weezer’s alt-rock godliness was of the likes no one had ever seen before. They were different. In the 80’s, it was all about partying, Girls Girls Girls, and hair. At the turn of the decade, it was all about anger, With The Lights Out, and grunge. Then it became laziness, Longview, and punk. So when Weezer came around, naturally the people who weren’t punks, partyers, or flannel wearing lumberjacks found their voice. Rivers Cuomo‘s simple yet effective songs became staples for every geeks collection. Bands since then have tried ripping off their geekiness (One geek band going so far as to be called Wheatus), but Weezer perfected the art of nerd long before the pretenders. When uncovering the lyrics behind the songs, you find happy little childhood dreams mixed with songs about girls and beer. Lines like “Wee-oo I look Just Like Buddy Holly. Oh-oh and you’re Mary Tyler Moore” became anthems for the whole generation. Rivers had the gift for turning a monologue of Hemingway quality into a rocking track. The 6/8 opener My Name Is Jonas is a track centered around some folkish finger picking. The literate rants are cut off midway through for a headbanging bridge thats just so random and funny. There have been very few albums that can change the face of music both culturally and musically. Weezer made it cool to be an honors student. Weezer made it cool to be a geek. But with Blue, Weezer made it cool to be all those things, and be rock stars. My only complaint is the upsettingly short ten songs. Weezer’s never been good at packing in the extras, but another few songs wouldn’t have killed the genius of the other 7 or 8 great songs on here. But in terms of musicianship, charm, songwriting, and cultural signifigance, Weezer’s debut album is the pinnacle of their career. Kinda sucks when you peak at your debut, eh? (sputnikmusic)

My Top 10 Albums in 2011

My Top 10 Album of 2011

Ready or not it is time for us to say goodbye to 2011. There’s always good music have been created every year. Always. Thank God it’s not early 90’s. It would be hard for me to choose Top 10 Albums on those early years.

So here’s my Top 10 Album in 2011. No complaining please, i made it in a blink of an eye 🙂

10. Fucked Up – David Comes To Life

Canadian hard core punk. Reminds me to Rancid. Lighter version. No bass slapping though. Just listen to “The Other Shoe”. You’ll find out why.

9. Explosions In The Sky – Take Care, Take Care, Take Care

Instrumental post rock. No vocal involved. That’s why i love this album.

If you do joga or meditation and looking for ambient music. This one is for you.

8. Mastodon – The Hunter

It took me months to comprehend this album. It’s not easy listening band. It’s Mastodon. It took me weeks to comprehend how good is Crack The Skye.

But don’t you love their artworks?

7 – Batman: Arkham City – The Album

Never play the game. But this soundtrack represents 2011. One of the best this year. Keytrack: Blaqk Audio – Afterdark, Crosses – The Years

6. Megadeth – 13

Do you know that David Ellefson is just like Cliff Burton to Metallica? Wanna prove? Listen to this album. Megadeth never made good album until Dave Ellefson reunites with this band.

5. Foo Fighters – Wasting Light

I never thought this band can be this big. Have you? You would have thought that Dave Grohl is just another drummer who tried to push his luck post Kurt Cobain suicide. But he’s not. I bet they will take one of the grammy next year.

4. Ryan Adams – Ashes & Fire

Probably his best album. This is how you do it Ryan. Dylanesque. Acoustic guitar and sing your love song.

3. AHK-toong BAY-bi

Twenty years ago “Achtung Baby” was released and to me it’s still the best U2 album ever made. They will never make better album. I promise you that.

The best album deserves good cover version album. When you have NIN, Jack White, Depeche Mode, Garbage, The Killers, Patti Smith in one album. How can even you resist it?

2. Angels And Airwaves – Love Part Two

The movie sucks. Big time. But this album is something to me, personally. U2 (guitar riff) combines with The Cure (keyboard/synth) and signature vocal of Tom DeLonge. Avantgarde. You can now forget Blink 182.

1. Adele – 21

Yeah i know this is not a surprise. But, you probably forget that Amy Winehouse has passed away this year. Yes Adele stole the whole plot.

Imagine this. Your beloved ex is married and settle down. You’re drunk. Rain pouring hard outside you’re dry inside and then listen to these last two songs; “Lovesong” and then continues to “Someone Like You”. Ha! You’re falling to pieces. 🙂

I predict Grammy 2012 is her celebration. Celebration of the brokenhearted. Irony.

Honorable Mentions:

1. Florence And The Machine – Ceremonials

2. Mayer Hawthorne – How Do You Do

3. PJ Harvey – Let England Shake

4. Bon Iver – Bon Iver

5. Frank Ocean – Nostalgia, Ultra

6. The Beastie Boys, Hot Sauce Committe Part II

7. The Black Keys – El Camino
